M8 Connectors Overview

The M8 connector applies to the device connection of sensors, Fieldbus modules, and industrial controllers. It is available in 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 contact configurations for cables and panel sockets. Most connectors are shipped with PUR/PVC cable overlays or supplied with included wire leads.

The main purpose of the M8 connector is designed for Ethernet connectivity in harsh environments. It has the advantage of being tougher and resists well compared to other types of connectors.

M8 connector basic performance

The basic performance of the M8 connector can be divided into three main categories: namely, mechanical performance, electrical performance, and environmental performance.

1. Mechanical performance

From a functional point of view, the most important thing is to require the mechanical properties of the connector. Insertion force is divided into insertion force and pull-out force (pull-out force is also known as separation force), and the requirements of the two are also different. One of the key criteria is the maximum insertion force and minimum separation force provisions.

From the point of view of use, the insertion force should be small (so that there is a low insertion force LIF and no insertion force ZIF structure), while the separation force, if too small, will affect the reliability of the contact. And mechanical life said is actually a durability indicator.

In the international, we will usually call it mechanical operation. It is a cycle of one insertion and one extraction, to the specified plugging and unplugging cycle after the connector can properly complete its connection function (such as contact resistance value) as the basis for judging.

2. Electrical performance

We all know that the connector’s main electrical properties include contact resistance, insulation resistance, and electrical strength.

3. Environmental performance

Environmental performance is a general term that includes temperature, humidity, salt spray, vibration, and shock resistance.
